The Tale of Hag's Plummet
How the cliffs south of Sandpoint came to their name, as told by the local farmers.
"The beautiful Bevanka was considered the most beautiful woman in Sandpoint and all the way down to Magnimar. But one morning, while combing her hair, she discovered a single grey one among the others. She was frightened, now aware of the transience of her beauty and youth. So she sought the help of a witch, old Moringa. Which lived, or so they say, somewhere on the Devil's Plateau. Moringa promised to make her a magic potion. I don't know what the beautiful Bevanka had to give her in return. But the potion certainly wasn't without a price, because only death is free in life. The old witch warned her: The magic potion would give her eternal youth and beauty, but only as long as she didn't fall in love with a man.
So the beautiful Bevanka lived alone on her farm, and the news of her beauty spread throughout the region, even throughout Varisia. Many men came to woo her, but she sent them all away and remained alone. But after many years she was tired of being alone and so Bevanka took in a lonely wanderer who had a pure heart. She asked him to stay, but on the day she confessed her love to him - because she hoped he would return her feelings - she suddenly aged into an old woman. Bevanka hoped for love, but she was disappointed and betrayed. Repelled by her true appearance, the young man fled and left her farm, never to be seen again.
And that same night, overwhelmed by grief and despair, Bevanka went to these same cliffs and threw herself into the depths and death. Since then, people call these rocks here "Hag's Plummet". Young couples often come here at night to reassure each other of their love. But lonely hearts also often throw themselves to their deaths. So they say."
